It is not an option to let your HVAC system fail, especially with North Carolina’s climate. Are you looking for tips to help you keep your HVAC system running at max performance? This article is for you!

If your HVAC system is acting up, take a tour of the house prior to calling a professional. Jot down the rooms that are hot and the ones that are cold. That knowledge can help the technician figure out what is going on.

Think about what improvements you want made before picking an HVAC contractor. It will be hard for a contractor to give you a price estimate over the phone if they have not seen your current system. You need to know how to describe any issues. So, have this information ready.

To make sure your condenser fan works properly, keep the fan blades and the coils clean. Prior to working on or cleaning the unit, be sure to turn off the power. Additionally, remove leaves and any other debris from the outside condenser unit.

Keep your outdoor units free of debris when you are mowing the lawn. When you work with your lawn mower, make sure it spits the grass to the side opposite of your unit. Make sure you move around the unit and blow the leaves away from it while blowing your leaves.

Lubricate the oil ports on your condenser once each year. You can easily find the ports as they have a rubber or metal cap. Get an oil that is SAE 20 and put about 10 drops into each port, but don’t overfill it.

If you want to know where you should put an outdoor compressor, you should place it somewhere where there is a lot of shade. In this way, it will be cooling air that is already somewhat cooled. This saves energy.

For maximum efficiency, place outdoor units in a shady spot. The air in the shade is cooler and can help save on energy costs.

If you own your own home or have permission from your landlord, replace your single pane windows with double paned versions. Good double pane windows keep cool air in during the summer and minimize your utility expenses. This same effect also keeps warm air in during the winter months.

Consider getting a programmable thermostat for your AC. Programmable thermostats can reduce your power HVAC energy costs by as much as ten percent, just by dialing back your thermostat ten or fifteen percent up to eight daily hours. Additionally, some programmable thermostats can be controlled remotely using a web-connected device.

If you’re away from home during the day, raise the temperature setting on your air conditioner to save money. When you turn it off, the house heats up, but only to a certain threshold. If it is on all day, it is trying to maintain a cool temperature constantly, using a great deal of electricity to fight the heat.

Maintaining your system is critical. It can be quite costly to fix a failed HVAC system. You can easily prevent serious damage by performing simple maintenance techniques found above.
